Founded in 1874, Adelaide University is South Australia's oldest and the third-most historic in Australia. This important educational institution has four large campuses and is home to around 25,000 students. Adelaide University is situated in the central cultural precinct, next to the Botanic Gardens and close to the Rundle Mall shopping centre, the National War Memorial, Elder Park and the Festival Centre.
The attractive complex is a popular place to visit and has exceptional facilities, including numerous societies, sports clubs and a number of onsite museums, along with a well-stocked bookshop. Of note, this is the premier university in South Australia and it is well-known for its extensive research in the fields of agriculture, energy and the environment.

Campuses
There are four main campuses at the University of Adelaide, as follows:
North Terrace Campus
The North Terrace campus features excellent research facilities and many social activities. This was the first part of the original university and it contains an interesting mixture of historic and modern buildings, lecture theatres, parklands and dining areas.
Roseworthy Campus
The Roseworthy campus specialises in agriculture and animal farming, and regularly hosts seasonal events, whilst also containing a large gymnasium, a swimming pool, and a 19th-century chapel.
Waite Campus
The Waite campus contains an enormous agricultural research centre and many large buildings, with picturesque parklands and landscaped gardens.
Thebarton Campus
The Thebarton campus has large research facilities, with the latest technology and many impressive buildings.
Societies and Sports Clubs
The University of Adelaide has more than 100 societies, clubs and leisure activities, including many sport and recreation clubs covering a wide range of different sports. Some of the most popular sports clubs based here include athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, cricket, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, judo, karate, lacrosse, rowing, rugby union, sailing, scuba diving, soccer, squash, swimming, Tai Chi, tennis, triathlon, volleyball and water skiing, many of which take place on the surrounding playing fields.
Faculties
South Australia's University of Adelaide contains a number of important different faculties and departments within its campus, as follows:
- Academic Faculties - including chemical and electrical engineering, computer science and mathematics
- School of Mechanical Engineering - with impressive educational programs in aerospace and various aspects of mechanical engineering
- Faculty of Health Sciences - containing extensive facilities for dental and medical studies, including a large surgery department
- Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences - featuring music centres, history studies, foreign language schools and politics courses
- Faculty of the Professions - including a number of business and law schools, architectural courses and an economics department
- Faculty of Sciences - with schools specialising in foods, chemistry, physics and biology
